Ever feel like your financial plan has to be perfect?
It doesn’t. In fact, trying to make it perfect can actually hold you back.
I recently had the chance to speak with Carl Richards, author of the new book “It’s Going to Be Amazing (Mostly Wrong)” — and one idea from our conversation really stood out:
“Rather than trying to be precisely correct today about the next 30 years, let’s wake up every day and be a little less wrong.”
– Carl Richards
That’s a shift in mindset that many of us need.
Carl explained that this book is the result of “two decades worth of thinking” — and more than just a collection of ideas, it’s been a way for him to spark deeper conversations. As he put it:
“I’m really viewing it as almost like a forcing function to have a bunch of really great conversations. And it’s been so rewarding and fun and gratifying.”
Carl’s visual, “A Little Less Wrong Tomorrow,” is a reminder that the future is always uncertain — whether you’re planning for retirement, your next job, or a major life transition. And while we can’t predict everything, we can stay flexible and focused.
He gave a great example:
“It’s no different than a pilot flying from Los Angeles to Boston. You start with a detailed flight plan, but you know it won’t go exactly as planned. It’s the course corrections that matter.”
That’s how I approach planning with clients. We put a smart strategy in place, and then we adjust as life happens — jobs change, markets move, goals evolve.
The key isn’t to get it perfect today. It’s to have a process that helps you make small, meaningful adjustments over time.
“We want to draw the best straight line we can, but we know it’s going to be wrong — we just don’t know how yet.”
– Carl Richards
That’s why this idea — “Be Less Wrong Tomorrow” — is one I come back to often in my work.
