Common Retirement Planning Questions Answered Through the R5 Retirement Process™

Deciding whether to retire fully, delay retirement, or phase into retirement is one of the most important financial and lifestyle decisions you will make. Through R1 – Replace Paycheques, we first determine whether your income sources can support your desired lifestyle without employment income.

Then, through R3 – Retain Lifestyle and Wealth and R5 – Remain Flexible, we review whether part-time work, consulting, or a gradual transition could reduce portfolio withdrawals, lower stress, improve tax planning, and give you more freedom to adjust. Retirement does not have to be an all-or-nothing event; for many Canadians, a phased retirement can provide both financial confidence and lifestyle flexibility.

Once you stop working, your paycheque does not automatically continue — it has to be created from your financial assets. Through R1 – Replace Paycheques, we coordinate your retirement income sources, which may include CPP, OAS, pensions, RRSPs, RRIFs, LIFs, TFSAs, non-registered investments, rental income, company savings plans, or corporate assets.

The goal is to turn these different pieces into a reliable monthly cash-flow strategy that supports your lifestyle. This may include a bucket strategy, systematic withdrawals, tax-efficient account sequencing, and annual reviews to make sure your retirement income remains sustainable.

Reducing taxes in retirement is not about one single tactic; it is about coordinating all sources of income over time. Through R2 – Reduce Taxes, we look at which accounts to draw from first, when to start CPP and OAS, how to manage RRSP and RRIF withdrawals, whether pension income splitting applies, and how non-registered investments can be structured more tax efficiently.

The goal is to increase your after-tax income, reduce avoidable tax, and help preserve more capital for your lifetime and possibly the next generation. A well-designed retirement tax strategy can help reduce unnecessary tax today, while also planning for future estate and legacy needs.

No retirement plan can eliminate market risk, but a well-designed plan can help prepare for it. Through R3 – Retain Lifestyle and Wealth, we build an investment strategy designed to provide income today while still allowing for long-term growth to help offset inflation.

Through R4 – Reducing Risk, we stress test the plan for market declines, sequence-of-return risk, inflation, and unexpected withdrawals. This may include maintaining short-term cash reserves, using a diversified portfolio, rebalancing regularly, and adjusting withdrawals when necessary. The objective is not to predict every market event, but to create a plan that can adapt when markets are difficult.
